Joan Aleene Barnes of Manton passed away Friday evening, April 7, 2017 at Belle Oakes Living Center near Lake City. She was 86. Joan was born on February 12, 1931 in Cadillac to Leo N. & Eva E. (Hobbs) Getter.
Joan graduated from Manton High School and later was employed as a private duty companion. She had also worked with the foster grandparent through the State of Michigan and was the “Grandma” at Oasis where she taught the residents how to knit and cook. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and embroidering and had knitted many baby hats for the hospital and had given many family members gifts. Joan had a passion for her parakeet “Baby” and enjoyed teaching it to talk.
Mrs. Barnes attended Boon Baptist Church and Rollins Christian Fellowship for many years.
Survivors include her children: Cindy (Tom) Reichhardt of Manton, Douglas (Barbara) Barnes of Harrietta, Janet (Manfred) Johnson of Gastonia, NC and Dean (Sherry) Barnes of Kalkaska; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and 4 great- great grandchildren. In addition to her parents Joan was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Smith and a brother, Alan Getter.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Peterson Funeral & Cremation Services in Cadillac with Pastor Bart Gulpker officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Manton. Friends may meet the family from 5-7 PM Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice. "Joan was a wonderful Foster Grandparent Volunteer. She was with our programs for 10 years. She touched the lives of many children through her service. We will miss her. Our thoughts are with her family. Joan was lovely."
