Demetrios “Jim” Kerkyras

February 28, 1934 - April 11, 2017

Demetrios “Jim” Kerkyras of Cadillac passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Samaritas Senior Living in Cadillac where he was for rehab. He was 83.

He was born on February 28, 1934 in Corfu, Greece to Nicoforos and Alexandra (Giannousis) Kerkyras.

Before moving to the United States Jim was a percussionist with the Corfu Philharmonic Orchestra in Greece. He moved to the United States in 1955 to attend the University of Michigan and later Wayne State University. While at school he worked at Stouffers Restaurant and Bar in Detroit. Jim served in the United States Army in the early 1960’s. He then went to work for Fidelity Mutual Life for eight years. In 1972 he moved to Cadillac and purchased the former Elm Rest, currently known as Thirty’s, and also owned and operated Midget Market and Domino’s Pizza in Cadillac for many years.
He enjoyed gardening, was an avid reader and loved attending all his grandchildren’s games.

On March 5, 1981 in Traverse City, Michigan he married the former, Georgia DeFrain and she survives him along with daughters: Renee Kerkyras of Sterling Heights, Lia (Chris) Johns of Warren, Andrea (Bob) Sake of Cadillac; grandchildren: Gabrielle Sake, Nicolas Sake, Anthony Sake, Georgette Sake, Donovan Johns, Avery Johns.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a step son, George Glavas in 1984.

A memorial gathering will be held from 12 noon to 3:00 PM, Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Coyote Crossing Resort with full military rites under the auspices of the Cadillac Area Honor Guard at 1:30 p.m. His final resting place will be Maple Hill Cemetery in Cadillac.
