Roy Edwin Coon

February 08, 1951 - September 30, 2017

Roy E. Coon, 66, passed away on Saturday evening, September 30, 2017 at home, surrounded by family following a courageous battle with cancer.

Roy never complained, even during his difficult illness. Always one with “a word for the day” to those he crossed paths with, Roy loved to make people laugh. Roy was one of the most loving, giving and selfless individuals one had the privilege to know. Always ready to lend a helping hand, he could fix almost anything.

Roy was born on February 8, 1951 to Donald and Lillian (Johnston) Coon in Detroit, and they preceded him in passing. Raised in Dearborn, Michigan, Roy was employed right out of high school with Michigan Bell Telephone, initially as a phone installer, but later as a heavy equipment transporter. While in Saginaw he was actively involved in Boy Scouts Troop 312, helping his son achieve Eagle Scout and continued his involvement with Boy Scouts for many years.

On May 19, 1973 Roy entered into marriage with Diane Bower, his high school sweetheart and one of the luckiest girls in the world. He was the best and most considerate, loving husband. They made their home in Dearborn Heights until Roy was transferred to Saginaw in 1986 and lived there until Roy’s retirement in 1999, whereupon they moved to Cadillac.

Roy is survived by his wife, Diane Coon; son, Chuck (Patricia) Coon of Flint; daughter, Kelli Coon of Cadillac; sisters, Donna (David) LaBelle of New Boston, Michigan and Betty Conant of Dearborn Heights, and loving brother and dear friend, Coy (Pola) Coon of Trenton. Roy was also a loving grandpa to Allie (Edward) Smith of Flint and Katie and Benjamin Gregory of Owosso. He also leaves behind 3 beautiful great-grandchildren, Savannah, Skylar and Jackson, all of Flint, whom he adored. Roy was a loving brother-in-law to Lori McDonald of Cadillac and Joan Bunge of Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, October 14, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Cadillac with Pastor Michael Stambaugh and Reverend David McMahon officiating. Friends may meet the family Friday, October 13, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Peterson Funeral and Cremation Services. His final resting place will be Cherry Grove Township Cemetery in Wexford County.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Building Fund or Hospice of Michigan, Cadillac Chapter. An online guestbook is available at
