Donald K. Cornell

January 20, 1951 - January 02, 2018

Donald K. Cornell of Mesick passed away Tuesday evening, January 2, 2018 at his home. He was 66.

Don was born on January 20, 1951 in Cadillac to Harold S. & Leota B. “Pug” (Falor) Cornell and they preceded him in death.

Don attended Cadillac Public Schools and later entered the United States Army and proudly served for 4 years during Vietnam. After returning from his service to our country he worked a few jobs until he began his career with the City of Cadillac as the foreman at Maple Hill Cemetery for over 20 years.
Hunting and fishing were a couple of Don’s passions as well as painting, spending time with his family, cookouts, feeding the animals, being in the outdoors in general and just being home at the cabin. Don was instrumental in getting the Veteran’s memorial on the north side of Lake Cadillac constructed and placed.

Survivors include his children: Bobbie Jo (Todd) DeRuiter of Falmouth, Ryan Cornell, Jeffrey Cornell both of Cadillac, and Creighton Hughes; 6 grandchildren: Audrey & Avery DeRuiter, Alex, Annabelle and Ambyr Cornell, Marissa Swing; 2 great granddaughters: Aubrey Hughes and Olivia Swing; a brother, Larry (Linda) Cornell of Cadillac and a sister, Carin Ecker of Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents Don was preceded in death by his brother, Calvin “Cal” Cornell, an infant son, Bradley J. Cornell and a grandson, Bradley Hughes.

Memorial graveside services with full military rites under the auspices of the Cadillac Area Honor Guard will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery in Cadillac at a later date.
