Nicholas Gerald Ball

August 21, 1973 - September 02, 2018

It is with profound grief and sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, uncle and partner, Nicholas Gerald Ball, on Sunday, September 2, 2018. He was 45 years old.

Nick was seven months old when he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, but never let it define him. On the contrary, he defined what it meant to live alongside the challenge with grace, dignity and courage. He never once complained at the rougher road he was forced to travel, but instead defiantly ran uphill the entire way. He never compromised, always expecting the best out of himself and encouraging others to find their best selves. To the end, he lived and died on his own terms.

Some people are sent here to learn and others to teach; Nick was chosen to teach. He taught many how to live each day to the fullest, never waste a moment, grab life with both hands, and most importantly of all, to fill your life with the only thing that matters: Love.

Nick was preceded in death by his father and best friend, Gerald Ball on May 19, 2018. He has left behind many people who will be forever changed for having known and loved him. He is survived by his love, Wendy Hodder, her son, Alex; his mother, Sheryl (Wood) Ball; daughter, Alysa Ball; sister, Shani (Paul) Skutt; nephews: Zachary and Nicholas; and countless friends and family. He will be especially missed by dear family friends, Roger & Linda Walker and his faithful canine companion, Stolli.

The family requests that all those who wish to attend the graveside service meet at Peterson Funeral & Cremation Services in Cadillac Saturday, September 15, 2018 to depart in procession at 11:00 AM. Nick’s final resting place will be Selma Township Cemetery where graveside services will be held at 11:30 AM. A luncheon will follow the graveside service and details will be given at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be lovingly given in Nick’s memory to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. An online guestbook is available at

"So sad to hear of Nick’s passing. I remember the first time I saw him walk in the CF Clinic at MUSC. We were instantly connected and on a mission to get him to transplant. He taught me a lot about bravery, love of family and extreme patience. I will carry on his memory with every CF patient I care for. RIP and breathe easy Nick Ball."

"My thoughts and prayers are with your families. I am very happy to have seen him, even if it was only for a short time, in May. I happened to be walking up my driveway and he was driving by and he stopped. We chatted for a bit, hugged, then he continued on. It had been years since I seen him. Jerry, Sheryl and the kids were neighbors in Harrietta. My deepest sympathy to all of you "
