Marcia Jean Barstow

December 15, 1936 - September 22, 2018

Marcia Jean Barstow of Cadillac passed away Saturday, September 22, 2018. She was 81.

Marcia was born December 15, 1936 in Muskegon, Michigan to Lester and Margaret (Russell) Shafer and they preceded her in passing. On June 4, 1979 in Grand Haven she married Richard Barstow and he preceded her in passing on March 24, 2018.

She graduated from Creston High School in Grand Rapids. Marcia worked at Bell Telephone in Grand Rapids for several years. She then worked at 9 &10 News and the United States Forest Service before retiring from Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids after 25 years. Upon retirement Marcia moved to the Upper Peninsula where she was an independent sales representative for AVON for over 30 years. She earned her way to becoming a Rose Circle Member.

Marcia enjoyed going to the beach, golfing, bowling, camping and trips to the casino. She was musically inclined; she loved to dance, play the piano and listen to Elvis. Marcia was gifted with a green thumb and enjoyed gardening. She had a wonderful sense of humor. Above all Marcia loved her family and especially cherished the children.

She is survived by her children: Shad (Becky) Smith of Baxter Springs, Kansas and Lisa (Craig “Moose”) Nelsen of Cadillac; step-daughter, Tracie Watson of Grand Rapids; grandchildren: Brooke (Ryan) Smith, Matthew (Emily) Smith, Michael Smith, Daniel (Melanie) Fisher, Brianne (Paul) Fogal, Izabella Smith, Logan (Keila) Knott, Aleah (Joseph) Safago; many great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; a sister, Barbara Hoogerland of Florida and her lifelong friend, Carol King of Three Rivers, Michigan.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a foster daughter, Mary Ann Rosenberry; a sister, Phyllis Miling and a brother-in- law, Carl Hoogerland.

Shad & Lisa, Aunt Marcia was one of my favorite people, though I didn't get to see her much in my adult life, I thought of her often, especially the time that her and Richard let me stay with them for a semester when I attended GRJC. Stay strong, love you guys"
