Walter James "Jim" Filak

May 13, 1945 - October 28, 2018

Walter James “Jim” Filak of Cadillac unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at his home. He was 73. Jim was born on May 13, 1945 in Chicago, Illinois to Walter John & Nettie (Mikosz) Filak who preceded him in death.

In 1963, Jim graduated from Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Homewood, Illinois and went on to the University of Iowa where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree. Jim’s working career began with W.T. Grant department store where he was employed until the late 1970’s. In 1977, he moved to the Cadillac area, was employed at Gambles for a short time, and later worked for True Value Hardware as a District Manager until 1992. He then went on to work for Ben Franklin, Hobby Lobby in Chicago, and Big Lots, all in management positions, until he retired in 2005.

Jim was a member of the Cadillac Elks Lodge #680 and attended Zion Lutheran Church in Cadillac. He was an avid sports enthusiast and played basketball in Cadillac twice a week until he was 70. He was passionate about playing Bridge and would play twice a week both locally and around Michigan with the American Contract Bridge League. Jim loved politics and would engage anyone in a spirited, yet good-natured, conversation about government and social systems, while maintaining civility and friendships.

On July 14, 2005 in Honolulu, Hawaii, he married the former Christine M. (Edwards) Nelson and she survives him along with his two sons: Clay (Stacey) Filak of Portage, MI and James Filak of Santee, CA; and their children: Willow Filak, Duncan Filak, Isabella Davison, Grayson Davison and Jessica Filak; two stepdaughters: Abby (Michael) Priehs of Saline, MI and AnnaLisa (Matthew) Blevins of New Canaan, CT; and their children: Mikaela & Anna Priehs, and Carter Blevins. Jim also had two brothers and sister: Ron (Mary) Filak of Okatie, SC, Ken Filak, and Karen (Peter) Ehrhorn all of Kailua, HI; and several special nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held in the spring of 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church in Cadillac. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or to the Elk’s Lodge #680 Scholarship Fund. An online guestbook is available at
