Carlton L. Mercer

April 30, 1929 - November 15, 2018

Carlton Leon Mercer (Sonny) missed the sunrise on November 15, 2018 as he entered eternal rest surrounded by this family. Born in Harrietta Michigan on April 30, 1929 at 3:00 AM, he was always up before the sun. It became a family tradition, a big pot of coffee while we wait for the sun. Born to Carl J and Mable (Hewitt) Mercer with siblings Grace, Doris, Clarence, Howard, Frances, Jeanette and Annette.Carl proudly served our country in the United States Air Force as a firefighter from 1947-1950 with stations in Germany, Alaska and Washington. He was a machinist, fabricator and plant manager in the Grand Rapids area for the majority of his working life. After a short trial retirement, he was a contract trouble-shooter in a number of GM plants. In retirement he built a home on the family homestead in Harrietta and happily lived out his days far away from the city in the woods and meadows he loved most. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and a family that always kept him busy.
Carl is survived by his wife Janice; his youngest sister Annette; daughters Carla (Russ) Clark and Brenda (Mark) Wiersma; sons Terry (Denise) Mercer and Larry (Sandy) Mercer; step-daughter Leslie (Darin) Holmes and the mother of his children Alyce Gray. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends that love and will miss his “Carl-isms” and gruff voice.
As Carl requested, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service. A gathering of celebration to honor a life well lived will be scheduled in both the Cadillac and Grand Rapids areas. Memorial contributions can be made in his honor to Hospice of Michigan. They have been an amazing help to his family during the past few weeks and we thank all the wonderful people who shared in this last journey. An online guestbook is available at www.petersonfh.com
