Chester Clyde Clark

November 29, 1929 - March 04, 2019

Chester Clyde Clark of Cadillac passed away Monday, March 4, 2019 at his home. He was 89. He was born at home in Lake, Michigan on November 29, 1929 to Ray & Bertha (Sowle) Clark. Chet grew up on a farm and attended Wayne State University before entering the United States Army in 1951.

He loved his country and proudly served during the Korean War. Returning home he attended Michigan State Agricultural College and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in education from Michigan State University (same college and campus). And went on to receive his Master’s degree from Central Michigan University.

In 1959 he met and fell in love with Cynthia Caswell and on August 29, 1959 they were married at St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Detroit, Michigan.

Chet loved teaching. He was strict but fair, always wanting his students to be the best they could be. To his children he was kind and gentle. Chet loved his family and was proud of his children. He loved his children and their spouses and Chet couldn’t have loved his grandchildren more. And above all he loved his wife; he was her rock and foundation. Fishing and watching MSU Spartans and Detroit Tiger games were his passion. Everyone loved his homemade wine. Anticipating planting his annual garden Chet had already set his tomato plants under a grow light in his house.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years Cynthia; children: Phyllis Clark (Jeff) of Grand Rapids, Theresa (Dale) Ekdom of Roscommon, Paul Clark of Cadillac, David (Trina) Clark of Howell, and Diane (Joel) VanAntwerp of Reed City; 12 grandchildren: Brittany Lallo and Courtany Lallo (Rick Misner), John Ekdom (Elizabeth Raffa), Emily, Cynthia, and Noah Ekdom, Hannah, Olivia, Matthew and Isabelle Clark, Sophie and Nathan VanAntwerp; three great grandchildren: Lillianna, Aiden & Corbin Misner; a sister, Geraldine Clark of Barryton, MI and sisters-in-law: June Gibbons, Patricia Drinkwater, Hazel LaCroix and Maxine Clark.

"When I reminesce my growing up years they are marked fondly with Sunday breakfasts with the Clark family with Chet at the helm. He and Dad made many a pancake for our families and at those big after church pancake breakfasts. I had some of my first sips of wine at their home after the Honors Society Awards’ dinners. And he made the best authentic baked beans and parched corn. My baby sis Sarah Ruth had some pretty terrific God parents in Chet n Cindy and their family. Funny how what we may have taken for granted in childhood turn out to be some of our fondest memories and people."
