Gus H. Kihlstrand

October 07, 1947 - March 13, 2019



Gus H. Kihlstrand of Cadillac passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was 71. Gus was born October 7, 1947.

He graduated from Owosso High School and later earned his associate’s degree in business from Lansing Community College. After college Gus served overseas in the United States Air Force. Gus was the personal director at several companies such as; Universal Electric in Owosso, Bear Archery in Grayling and Mitchell- Bentley Corporation in Cadillac. Gus was currently employed at Set Seg, a school insurance company. He was with the company for almost 40 years and loved his career.

Gus was passionate about family. He loved spending time with them and was in his element at any sort of party with family and friends. Gus loved having fun and had a contagious sense of adventure. He had zest for life and an ability to love all people. Gus was a member of Eldorado Golf course since the course opened. He absolutely loved golf and enjoyed the camaraderie on the course.

In 1976 in Owosso, Michigan he married the former Mary L. Gorte. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Mary along with children: Laura Brown (Mike Teebe) of Oxford, Michigan, Rick G. Kihlstrand (Susan Rydquist) of Cadillac, Melissa Ryan of Grand Blanc, Kelly (Damon) Dostal and Kristyn (Eric) Stuart all of Cadillac; grandchildren: Brett Brown, Thomas Ryan, Jackson, Brooklyn and Mady Stuart; nieces, Kimberly (Joe) Gorton and Amanda (Brady) Lanter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hilding Gustaf and Irene Francis (Beebe) Kihlstrand; a brother, Terry Kihlstrand and a son-in-law, Michael Ryan.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Peterson Funeral and Cremation Services in Cadillac with Reverend Thomas W. Reinertson officiating. Friends may meet the family Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Although Gus would like memorial contributions to be made to the Southern Border Wall; contributions may be to the charity of your choice. An online guestbook is available at

    "My first memory of Gus was in first grade at Central School in Owosso Michigan. Our class was putting on I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus for the annual Christmas program. He was picked to be Santa Claus and I was picked kiss him under the mistletoe. We were classmates until we both graduated from Owosso High School. He will be missed."
