Robert Charles Finnerty of Cadillac passed away Saturday, March 16, 2019 at his home in Cadillac surrounded by family. He was 88.
Robert was born September 12, 1930 in Ada Township, Kent County, Michigan to Luke and Ioma (Huss) Finnerty and they preceded him in passing.
He graduated from Tustin High School in 1948 and started working at L.J. Deming Plumbing and Heating Company in 1949. He worked there until he was inducted into the Marine Corps in January 1952. He attended boot camp training in San Diego, California and was stationed at Camp Pendleton except for the six months he spent in Okibo, Japan before he was discharged in January 1954. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, he worked at Chris-Craft Boat Company, the Oldsmobile Plant, and on the pipeline in Midland and Marysville, Ohio before he started back at L.J. Deming Plumbing and Heating in 1955. He became part owner in 1961 and worked there until he left in 1965. He was a member of the Saginaw Plumbers and Pipefitters UA Local 85 and they sent him to work all over the state of Michigan until he retired in 1996.
In March 1955, Robert met the former Marian May Strom. They were engaged in November 1955 and were married the following year on June 23, 1956 at the parsonage of the First Covenant Church in Cadillac. They had two children together and were happily married for 62 years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marian, along with his daughter Barbara (Tim) Haines; his grandchildren: Lindsey Haines, Carrie (Bill) Benninger, Lacey Saxton, Melissa (Brian) Ransom, Megan Finnerty, Elise Finnerty, and Samantha Canfield; his great grandchildren; his sister Joyce Salisbury; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Luke and Ioma (Huss) Finnerty; his son, Steven Charles Finnerty; his brothers, Harold, Bernard, Michael, William, Joseph, and James Finnerty; and his sister, Irene (Finnerty) Loomis.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at the Cherry Grove Church of the Nazarene with Gary Pullen officiating and full military rights under the auspices of the Cadillac Area Honor Guard. Friends may meet with the family one hour prior to the service from 12 to 1 p.m. at the church. A luncheon will follow.
