September 15, 1934 - May 23, 2019
Joan Marie Grice Gauld Wilkins of Cadillac passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at Sunnyside Assisted Living with family and caring staff at her bedside. She was 84.
Born to Charles and Emma Grice on September 15, 1934, Joan lived her entire life in Cadillac. Her Class of 1952 was the last class to attend the old high school, formerly on the site of Kirtland Terrace Apartments. Graduation ceremonies that year were held in the “gleaming new high school” on Linden Street.
Joan was married to Gary Gauld of Manton from 1953-1970 and together they had five children, Michael (Jean) Gauld, Laurie Gauld, Julie (Dale) Rice, Shari Gauld Miller, and Bradley Gauld, all of whom survive her. In 1978 she married Carroll “Bud” Wilkins, and was blessed with two step-children, Carol (Art) Hurd and Jim (Judy) Wilkins, all of Akron, Ohio.
Also surviving areher dear sister, Mary (Jerry) Keith of Grosse Pointe Woods, special first cousin, Mary Jane Drilling, of Traverse City, 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Joan was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard Grice and John Grice, and a great-grandson, Hunter Fleming-Gauld, all of Cadillac.
Joan was a devoted mother, an excellent homemaker, and a talented seamstress, all while working a full-time job as a typesetter/graphic designer. She worked in the same building on Lake Street for over 30 years for the Buyer’s Guide, Lou’s Printing, thenNorthern Printing. For many years, she and her husband Bud served as directors for the Miss Wexford pageant, a local chapter of the Miss America program.
Joan enjoyed Florida vacations with her sister, playing Scrabble, shopping, and being a Grandma. Her family meant the world to her and she worked tirelessly to fulfill their needs. Her home was the center of the family and the door was always open. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her.
Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Cadillac with Chaplain William “Bump” Peters officiating. An online guestbook is available at www.petersonfh.com.
