Howard D. Scarbrough

Howard D. Scarbrough of McBain went to be with his Lord quietly in his sleep Sunday morning, February 17, 2013 at his home. He was 82. Howard was born September 1, 1930 in Manton to Edward Lee and Florence Irene (Holly) Scarbrough. In the late fifties and sixties Howard worked for Cadillac Equipment Company. From 1965 to the present he owned and operated Howard's Refrigeration Business. Howard was one of the original volunteer firemen on the Haring Township Fire Department. He also served as the Haring Township Clerk for many years as well as Missaukee County Commissioner for a number of years. Howard had also been involved with the Forgotten Man Ministries for several years and had served as chaplain for the past 12 years. In addition to enjoying his extended family he really enjoyed watching and hunting deer as well as salmon fishing on the big lake with his fishin' buddy, Frank Nixon. Howard married Polly Anna Norman on his eighteenth birthday, September 1, 1948. She preceded him in death on July 18, 1983. He is survived by the six children they raised: Jim Scarbrough (Kay Mallery), Robert (Cathy) Scarbrough, Pennie (Stan) Mattson, Tom Scarbrough (Cathy Compson), Pollie Jo (Charlie) Pinyard, Dan (Julie) Scarbrough; grandchildren: Kim (Forest) Manke, Jason Scarbrough, Kandy Mehlhorn, Matt Scarbrough, Nick (Lindsey) Jacobson, Brandon (Amber) Scarbrough, Kendra (Aaron) Sandburg, Trevor Scarbrough, April Franklin, Danny Pinyard, Chuck Pinyard, Rhea Henson, Jody Manning and Annie (Conner) Mullin. In October 1983 Howard married the former Lola Longstreth and accepted and enjoyed the challenge of having four more daughters and more grandchildren. He is survived by Lola and her four daughters: Kathy (Barry) Walker, Sue (Roger) Gilbert, Janice (Rick) Stevens and Melissa Longstreth; grandchildren: Benji (Shelley) Walker, Roxanne (Kyle) Eisenga, Heather (Eric) Dickerson, Gretchen (Jason) Howard and Shana Theison. Howard is also survived by: 34 great-grandchildren; 3 great- great grandchildren; sisters, Mary (Jim) Nelson, Nancy Lattimer, sister in law, Beverly (Devere) Willey, brother in law Don Hagberg; many nieces and nephews and in laws: Juanita (Wayne) Whitmore, Melvin (Fredia) LaVoye, Lila Koontz, Harold Curtis, Vivian Robinson and Tex (Leona) LaVoye. In addition to his first wife, Polly, he preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Jesse and Orland Scarbrough; son in law, Jerry Jacobson; great grandson Ben and step grandson Jamie Pursley. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the Temple Hill Baptist Church in Cadillac with Pastor John Feiler and Pastor Bart Glupker officiating. Friends may meet the family Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Manton.
