Carl Axel Gustafson of Cadillac died Monday morning, April 11, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac. He was 88. He was born on October 22, 1922 in Jennings to Edwin & Hulda (Johnson) Gustafson and they preceded him in death. He attended Stone Ledge Elementary School and graduated from Cadillac high School in 1940. Carl was a lifetime farmer in Clam Lake Township and breeder of Registered Shorthorn cattle. He was also a rural mail carrier from the Cadillac Post Office for 22 years and retired in 1982. Mr. Gustafson had served as Supervisor of Clam Lake Township for several years and was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Cadillac. On March 25, 1968 in St. Louis, Michigan he married the former Kathryn L. Burkett and she survives him along with their son, Stanley (Margaret) Gustafson of Cedar Springs; 2 grandchildren: Caitie and Austin; a sister-in-law, Florence Gustafson of Cadillac; 2 nephews: Edwin W. Gustafson of Chelsea, and Eric L. Gustafson of Cadillac. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Arthur S. Gustafson and a brother, John A. Gustafson in 1986. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac with Reverend Scott Torkko officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jennings. Friends may meet the family from 2-4 & 6-8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church. An online guestbook is available at www.petersonfh.com.
