Delvin Rowe (Del) Weiland of Cadillac died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010 at Lakeview Lutheran Manor in Cadillac. He was 78. He was born on August 5, 1932 in Ishpeming, MI to Frederick and Loretta (Rowe) Weiland and they preceded him in death. On April 30, 1960 he married Mary Ann Magee in Ypsilanti, MI. and they celebrated 50 years together this past April. Mr. Weiland graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1950. He attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette and graduated from Michigan Technological University in 1955 as a mechanical engineer. He worked designing trucks for Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn five years before moving to Roscommon where he worked for the D.N.R. at the Forest Fire Experiment Station designing fire equipment. In 1970 they moved to Cadillac where he became Dist. Fire Supervisor of 11 counties. Later he was also responsible for state forest campgrounds, horse trails, cross country ski trails and snowmobile trails. He was instrumental in designing the Clam River Cross Country Trail as well as the DNR Kalkaska field office and was District Fire Supervisor for the Department of Natural Resources for 27 years retiring in 1988. Since then they have spent winters in Florida at Gulf Waters RV Resort in Ft. Meyers Beach. Del tutored math at Franklin Elementary School after retirement and was happy helping children and was known to the students as the “Math Man†. In 1993 he and Mary Ann designed and built a new home from the ground up. They traveled in all the lower 48 states with their RV for 45 years. He was affiliated with the United Methodist Church in Cadillac and was past president & member of the Roscommon Rotary Club & past president and board member of the former West Michigan State Employees Credit Union. He enjoyed both down hill and cross country skiing and bicycling and always looked forward to visiting his two sons and helping them with any project. He is survived by his loving wife and family: Mary Ann Weiland of Cadillac; sons: Dennis Rowe Weiland of Sculpture, OK and Frederick W. “Fritz†(Eileen) Weiland of Oshkosh, WI; by his two grandchildren, whom meant the world to him and was so proud and happy of, Jace and Danielle Weiland; a brother, Keith F. (Lois) Weiland of Atlanta, GA, a sister, Janet (Gerrit) Gucky of Okemos, MI; sister-in-law, Roberta (Verlin) Harder and 10 nieces and nephews, who were all very special to him. Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac with Rev. Thomas Ball and Parish Assistant Judy Coffey officiating. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Cadillac. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 A.M. until time of services. In lieu of flowers please consider memorial contribution to the Cadillac Rotary Club for projects in the park, The Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, The United Methodist Church of Cadillac, or the 1st. Congregational United Church of Christ in Cadillac.
