Dorothea Alice (Hess) Rogers, of Gainesville, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Gainesville Healthcare in Gainesville, Fla. She was 98. She was born on September 16, 1913, in McBain, to Claude I. and Hazel N. (Aldrich) Hess. Her business education in accounting, her stenography skills and her entrepreneurial spirit served her well as a stenographer at Studebaker Corp., secretary to the president of Stroh\'s Brewery Co., surgical stenographer to doctors and surgeons at Maybury Hospital, in doing accounting and tax reports for various firms and, finally, in the organization of her own business, the Farmington Country Day Nursery, where she cared for 30 children. She raised four children with her husband of 42 years in a well-run and fun-loving home. She loved camping, gardening, reading, writing and needlework. She is survived by her son, Brian G. Rogers of Redford, Mich.; daughters, Claudia A. Rogers and Georgia L (Robert) Anderson of Gainesville, Fla.; grandchildren, Jennifer (Kirk) Nelson of Attica, Mich.; Issa Hanhan and Nicole Hanhan of Greensboro, N.C., Cassandra (Ben) Ellis of Rougemont, N.C., and Robert (Jeri) Anderson III of Gainesville, Fla. She was preceded in death by her mother, Hazel Hess; father, Claude Hess; siblings, Pierre Hess, Murray Hess, Donna (Hess) Drier; husband, Alfred Rogers; and daughter, Joan Rogers. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2012, at the Mount View Cemetery in McBain, with the Rev. James Sweet officiating. Visitation will be before the service from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Burkholder Funeral Home in McBain. Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America.
