Ernest Sylvester Nolan of Cadillac died Saturday evening, April 2, 2011 at Spectrum health Blodgett Campus in Grand Rapids. He was 83. He was born on June 9, 1927 in Boon to Sylvester A. & Pearl M. (Plotts) Nolan and they preceded him in death. He served in the United States Army as an M.P. during World War II. Returning from the war he had been employed at the Ford Garage in Cadillac for many years and retired from Delfield in Cadillac after several years of employment there. Mr. Nolan was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Cadillac and a life member of the AMVETS Post #110 of Cadillac and the VFW Post #6864 of Cadillac and the NRA. He enjoyed hunting with guns and bows, traveling and going out to eat and loved nature and to feed the animals. On December 17, 1948 in Germany he married the former Hildegard Rost and she survives him along with a brother, Lester Nolan of Boon; a sister, Beatrice Smothers of Alpena; a sister-in-law, Anne Marie (Franz) Ambrusch of Germany and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers: Herman, Clifford, and Arnold Nolan and sisters: Mary Koval, Gertrude Miller, and Zella Fargo. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, April 7, 2011 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Cadillac with Rev. Fr. Francis J. Murphy as celebrant. Full military rites under the auspices of the Cadillac Area Honor Guard will be held following the mass. Burial will be at Boon Westside Cemetery in Boon. Friends may meet the family from 5-7 PM Wednesday at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac. Memorial contributions may be made to the AMVETS Post #110 of Cadillac.
