Gale H. Damhof

October 8, 1939 - May 2, 2011

Gale H. Damhof age 71 of McBain went home to be with the Lord at his home with his family by his side on May 2, 2011. He was born on October 8, 1939 in Roseland, Minn., to Herman and Henrietta (Hoekstra) Damhof. He married Jeanne Geers on February 2, 1963 at the McBain United Presbyterian Church. Gale received a BS degree from Hope College, his Master\'s degree in math from Western, and a specialist degree from Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant. He had taught at McBain High School for 35 years, he had been a math and science teacher, high school principal, athletic director, j.v. basketball coach, cross country coach, student council advisor, and year book advisor. He had served as McBain City Treasurer for 30 years, was on the Missaukee Golf Board, president of the Lion\'s Club, Boy Scout Leader, little league coach, member of the M.E.A. and the McBain United Presbyterian Church. While a member of the church he served as Sunday school teacher and superintendent, sang in the men\'s choir, served as elder numerous terms, and had served as church clerk and treasurer. He also was a member of the Michigan Athletic Association. One of his favorite sports was playing golf. He is survived by wife, Jeanne Damhof of McBain; son, Jon Damhof of Cadillac; daughter, Mary Alice (Byran) Marschner of Moorseville, N.C.; grandchildren, Ericka (Kelly) Stillson and Ben Damhof; sisters, Fern (Richard) Marcus of San Joes, California, Joanne (Tom) Bowman of San Joes, California; inlaws, Bernard (Jo) Geers of McBain and Margaret (Bob) Newland of Cadillac; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; father in law and mother in law, Ben and Alice Geers. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 6, 2011 at the McBain United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Larry Grooters officiating. Burial will be at Mount View Cemetery at McBain. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Burkholder Funeral Home in McBain. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice or the Church.
