Kenneth S. Surprenant of Cadillac, formerly of Midland, met his Lord peacefully Tuesday, January 14, 2014 surrounded by his family in his home after a long brave battle with illness. He was 83. He was born on December 29, 1930 in New Haven, Connecticut and graduated from the University of Connecticut with a BA in Chemistry. Ken was a Lieutenant in the United States Army and had been employed at Dow Chemical Co. as a chemist for 35 years. He enjoyed the Michigan outdoors, hunting, camping and fishing as his family grew. Later he volunteered as a mentor in Midland Schools and developed a chemistry course for Delta College. Regularly he took road trips to help care for grandchildren. He also enjoyed woodcarving and his investment club. He will be lovingly remembered by friends and family as a loving Husband, devoted father and an unassuming and generous man. Survivors include: two sons, Michael (Pam) Surprenant and Craig Surprenant; his daughter, Doctors Lori (Grant) Crago; six grandchildren: Kyle, Ian and Eric Surprenant and Quinn, Sabrina and Katie Crago; a sister, Ruth (Ralph) Yulo and two half-brothers. He was preceded into heaven by his wife Lucille. The Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Friday, January 24, 2014 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Cadillac with Msgr. Francis Murphy as celebrant. Full military rites will be presented under the auspices of the Cadillac Area Honor Guard. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at the church. His final resting place will be Mount Carmel Cemetery in Cadillac. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Relief Services.
