Raymond Franklin Homminga Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Raymond Franklin Homminga of Mesick died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at Munson Medical Center. He was 89. He was born in Boon to John and Fannie (Becktel) Homminga on June 9, 1921 and they preceded him in death. On June 23, 1941 he married the former Florence E. Miller and later married the former Betty Jane Chapman in Boon on September 18, 1972 who preceded him in death on November 22, 2009. He was a night watchman for BF Goodrich and had also owned and operated Westside Service Station and Bait Shop in Cadillac. Raymond worked at Sharp\'s on M55 as a mechanic and had also worked at Wexford Sand Company as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. He enjoyed gardening, wood working, hunting, fishing, camping, animals and playing shuffleboard. Raymond was a WWII Veteran of the United States Army and received several medals as well as a Purple Heart. He was a member of D.A.V., American Legion Post 94 of Cadillac and affiliated with St. Ann Catholic Church and Faith Lutheran Church of Mesick. Survivors include his four children: Joseph (Mary) Homminga of Traverse City, Larry (Pauline) Homminga of Pueblo, CO, Patricia Stitt of Harrietta, and Kay (Wayne) Reitz of Mesick; step-children: Charles Bahr, Sue (Dennis) Stinson all of Charlotte, and Jack (Linda) Bechtel of Cadillac; 11 grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren; his special friend Jake Elenbaas of Cadillac and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Betty; son Paul R Homminga; grandson Joseph Homminga and his brothers and a sister. Funeral services and full military rites under the auspices of the Cadillac Area Honor Guard will be held 11:30 AM Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac with Fr. Jerry Micketti officiating. Friends may meet the family from 4-7 PM Tuesday at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
