Sigurd Paul Sjogren Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Sigurd Paul Sjogren, 77, died Monday, June 11, 2012 at his home in Cadillac. He was born in Cadillac on April 1, 1935 to the late Clifford (Cap) and Pauline (Gould) Sjogren.Sig graduated from the first graduating class of the new Cadillac High School in1953, and received a BA degree in Business from Central Michigan University. He married Melissa Tornberg in 1966 and they lived in the Detroit area before returning to Cadillac. As a teenager, he worked one summer as a seaman on a Great Lakes ore boat where he most enjoyed the job of painting the smokestacks high above the ship. He also served in the military as an instructor of skiing, mountain climbing, and cold weather survival at the Army\'s US Cold Weather and Mountain school in Alaska. Sig was a ski instructor at Nub\'s Nob and a long time member of the Caberfae Ski Club. He was an accomplished sailor and an active member of the Cadillac Mitchell Boat Club. He also served on the Cadillac Planning Board. Sig was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Cadillac. He was employed at Cadillac Rubber and Plastics/Avon Automotive for over 20 years and retired as the Purchasing Manager in 1998. For over 60 years, he enjoyed deer hunting with his Swedish hunting friends at the Johnson and Iverson camps in the Hobart area. According to Sig, he shared his name with a dragon-slaying Norse god, however this Sigurd did not slay anything larger than an Alaskan Dall sheep, unless you count a 1951 Buick. He will be remembered as a gentleman with a warm smile and quick wit, and for his ethical, unassuming, and dependable nature. Sig is survived by his wife, Melissa, and his two children: Anders (Karen) Sjogren of Chelsea, Michigan; and Brita (Jason) Rozgony of Broomfield, Colorado. He was known as Far Far to his four grandchildren: Mitchell, Sophia, Kiersten, and Nora. He is also survived by his only brother, Clifford (Top) and Patricia Sjogren of Cadillac and his nephews and nieces: Steve, Jan, Sue, Sig and their families. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Cadillac, with Rev. Scott Torkko officiating. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2012, at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac. His final resting place will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Cadillac.
