Victoria Ann "Vickie" Rock

December 28, 1927 - December 20, 2013

Victoria Ann "Vickie†Rock of Cadillac passed away Friday, December 20, 2013 at Curry House Assisted Living. She was 85. She was born December 28, 1927 in Cadillac to Victor H. Given and Esther S. Nelson. Mrs. Rock was a graduate of Cadillac High School. After marrying George Leeland Rock on September 14, 1946 in Cadillac, she worked as an operator for Bell Telephone while he pursued studies at Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan. After her husband graduated, they lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for five years, where her first two children were born. They subsequently moved to Midland, Michigan where her third child was born and she worked 21 years for the Midland Public School Systems, serving as the supervising and principal secretary at Herbert Henry Dow High School during most of those years. She and her husband returned to Cadillac in 1990 when they retired. Vickie enjoyed homemaking activities, baking, gardening and reading. She also enjoyed fellowship and church activities throughout her life and she was an active member of the South Community United Methodist Church in Cadillac. She was a protective older sister and loving mother, and throughout her life, she championed efforts that help children live happy and healthy lives. With her husband, Mrs. Rock contributed much to the Cadillac community over the years. They were co-founders and actively involved in the Cadillac Area Land Conservancy, and they also were actively involved in the Cadillac Rotary Club, especially the youth leadership programs, Mercy Hospital fund raising and 4-H youth and fundraising activities at the Kettunen Center. Vickie and her husband supported the Michigan State University Electrical Engineering Design Day Humanitarian Project, which provides solar powered computers and other equipment to schools in Tanzania. Vickie and her husband were the recipients of the 2012 Philanthropist Award from the Cadillac Area Community Foundation. She is survived by her husband, George Rock of Cadillac; a daughter, Cheryl Lee (Jeffrey H. Dysart) Rock of Del Mar, Calif.; a granddaughter, Victoria Marlin; two sisters, Janet Burrige of Kent, Wash. and Mary Ellen Dahlquist of Poulsbo, Wash. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Stephen G. Rock and a daughter, Marcia A. Levis. Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 17, 2014 at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac with Reverend Chic Broersma and Reverend James Mort officiating. Her final resting place will be Maple Hill Cemetery in Cadillac. Memorial contributions may be made to Cadillac Rotary Charities. An online guestbook is available at www.petersonfh.com.
