Evelyn (Mae) Elenbaas

MCBAIN - Evelyn (Mae) Elenbaas, age 87 of McBain, went home to be with the Lord on June 25, 2011 at Autumnwood of McBain. She was born on March 2, 1924 in Riverside Twp., Missaukee County to William and Maggie (Herweyer) VandePol. She married Arthur A. Elenbaas on Feb. 1, 1944 at the VandePol family home east of McBain. He preceded her in death on March 10, 2011. Mae had been a homemaker and was known for her canning of pickles, pickled beets, and sauerkraut. She enjoyed bowling and playing golf. She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Cadillac and had taught Sunday School, was the children\'s song leader, member of the L.W.M.L., the Ladies Aid Society and the choir. She was active in the McBain Women\'s Club and also in the Missaukee County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. She volunteered for many things and was honored by Autumnwood of McBain for over 25 years of service. Surviving are her children: Audrey (Jerry) Gumm of McBain, Dollene VanPolen of Marion, Wilma (Lee) Bushor of Cadillac, Steve (Joan) Elenbaas of McBain, Carol (Jim) Hende of Ludington, and Stan (Sue) Elenbaas of Sparta. 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Inlaws: Georgene (Casper) Dick of Jenison, Edith Quist of Cadillac, Dorothy Shelton of Flint, Harold (Pat) Elenbaas of Otsego, Ray (Angie) Elenbaas of Jenison, Kathleen Elenbaas of Manistee, Marian Elenbaas of Grandville, Anita Elenbaas of Plant City, FL., Gertrude Marcus of McBain, Frances Bekken, and Ed Bekken of McBain, and Ken (Iva) Bekken of Marion. Many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Gordon Roy Elenbaas, sons in law: Bill VanPolen and Tom Cass, siblings: Harold (Nellie and Tina) Vandepol, Jake (Rula) VandePol, Carl (Helen) VandePol, Melvin VandePol, Florence Reinink, Clara (Harvey) Gort, parents in law: Richard (Ottilie and Anna Bekken) Elenbaas, in laws: Marvin, Gordon, Clayton and Wilbur Elenbaas, Quentin Quist and Elton Shelton and Claude Marcus. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Cadillac Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Joel Hess officiating. Burial will be at the Mount View Cemetery in McBain. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Burkholder Funeral Home in McBain. Memorial contributions may be made to the Missaukee County Relay for Life or Autumnwood of McBain.
