Jean Ilene Lumbard

Jean Ilene Lumbard, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by family, at the age of 90. Born on June 22, 1935, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Jean was the daughter of Carl M. Muir and Marguerite H. Muir. She attended Comstock High School, where she showcased her remarkable singing talent, performing on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour and at various venues throughout her life. In August 1951, Jean married Ralph A. Lumbard of Kalamazoo, embarking on a love-filled journey that would last an incredible 74 years. Their love story began when she invited him to a Sadie Hawkins Valentine's Day Dance earlier that year, marking the start of a lifetime of cherished memories. In 1967, Jean and Ralph moved their family to Harrietta, Michigan, where they opened their first restaurant and gas station, “Family Affair.” Over the years, they also owned “Jeannie’s Fine Food Restaurant” and “Ralph’s Little Shelf,” a party store and gas station. Jean was deeply involved in the community, contributing her time and energy to organizations such as Rebecca's, Eastern Stars, and the Theta Roe Girls Club. She proudly served as a volunteer firefighter and ran the Mesick Mushroom Festival Flea Market for many years, leaving a lasting impact on her community Jean and Ralph raised four children: Cathy (Steve) Conner, Jean (Matt) Oliver, Ralph Jr. (Shellee) Lumbard, and Jody (Kirk) VanBogelen. Their daughters Margaret and Barbara passed away at birth. Jean is also survived by her brother, Carl “Sonny” D. Muir of Cadillac. In 1990, Jean and Ralph retired and moved to Mesick, Michigan, where they enjoyed traveling to all 50 states and formed deep connections with many friends. They spent their winters in Congress, Arizona, and cherished summers in Mesick. Jean's greatest pride was her family, which includes her four children, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, whom she adored. With infectious joy and kindness, she welcomed everyone into her life, turning acquaintances into lifelong friends. Jean's legacy is one of love, warmth, and generosity, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. A celebration of Jean's life will be held on Friday, February 6 at 11:00am at Peterson Funeral and Cremation Services (205 East Cass Street, Cadillac, MI). 10-11am Visitation where family and friends can come together to share memories and honor her remarkable journey. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eastern Stars Sherman Chapter #197 of Mesick in Jean's name, continuing her legacy of giving and community service.
